How to Watch USB Movies on Roku

The Roku 2 XS allows you to watch your own movies right from a USB stick. Here’s how you can get it working: Make sure you have a movie in an appropriate format, mainly H.264 or WMV/ASF Make sure the USB stick is formatted properly, FAT16, FAT32, HFS+, or NTFS file systems are noted to work. Install the USB Device “Channel” through the channel store – it is free. Visit the USB Channel on your Roku XS device If there is more than one USB device showing up check them both. Voila! Now you can watch movies directly from a USB jump drive / thumb drive on your Roku. Remember that the Micro SD card slot is only used as storage and you can’t watch movies from it.

THRYLL.COM Scam?

Yesterday I received an e-mail inviting me to join THRYLL.COM promising “THRYLL.COM is a Members-Only community offering top apparel and gear from the most Extreme Action Sports brands at up to 70% off” and was a little worried. It reminded me a lot of getting an e-mail from an unknown company called ShoppyBag where someone had tagged a photo of me and which required me to log in before seeing the photo, after which you entered your contact or email information and all of your friends were invited in the same way, and never actually being able to log in. So this is what I thought Thryll.com was at first glance. I created this blog entry to talk about the laundry list of things that Thryll.com was doing wrong which made me think they were sketchy. So, below is the list of reasons that I had marked them off as a scam, however, the company does look to be actively engaged in remedying these problems (see their comments below – they e-mailed me with much of the same info) and I have to give them credit for trying to fix these things, even though they are not all fixed yet, they are working on it. So I have not logged in and ordered anything from them, but I encourage people who have to post comments below talking about their experience. So, here is the list of problems with Thryll.com that I found on 10-18-2011: (fixed) Absolutely no information or contact … Continue reading

Cache: Sarah’s Non-Traditional Job Search Experiment

This is a cache of a a webpage (http://livorna.com/job/) which was available on 8/26/2011. Hi, I’m Sarah and I need a job. The traditional job search method seems to penalize me because I’m not very traditional. I thought I’d try something different. I’ve been doing front-end web development for more than 10 years. HTML, CSS and JavaScript are my closest friends. I’ve been playing with Node.js, MongoDB and Ruby on my own lately. I’ve done PHP and Java in the past. I’m not entirely picky about technologies (just… no Microsoft please). I’m more concerned with working with good people and learning as much as I can. I’m going to tell you some things about myself that aren’t things you would normally disclose in a job interview, but I’m going with this experimental angle. Don’t worry, there’s good things too. So, here’s some not-necessarily-awesome-stuff about me: I don’t have any friends or family that are remotely interested in computers, so I don’t have anyone to casually “talk shop” with and I tend to stumble when discussing things. I read a wise thing recently: make sure you aren’t the smartest engineer at your job. I’ve failed at that pretty consistently. I’ve always been the one passing knowledge onto others, but rarely have I been the recipient. I’m not an idea person. I’m a get-things-done person. I think Twitter is silly. And here’s some rather-awesome-things about me: I’m smart and I learn really fast. I’m extremely passionate about what I do. I love … Continue reading

Twitterbot

Twitter has a bot to crawl webpages: Twitterbot. I noticed it in the server logs. The user agent is Twitterbot/1.0. The IP address is 199.59.149.166. Why is twitter crawling web pages? Google’s spiders regularly crawl the web to rebuild our index. Crawls are based on many factors such as PageRank, links to a page, and crawling constraints such as the number of parameters in a URL. Any number of factors can affect the crawl frequency of individual sites.
